Digital Radiography

What is digital radiography?

Digital radiography is a type of x-ray imaging that uses digital x-ray sensors to produce images of the bones, joints, and soft tissues of the body. Unlike traditional film-based x-ray images, digital radiography images can be viewed, stored, and transferred electronically. This means that they can be shared with other healthcare providers more easily and quickly, and they can be viewed on a computer screen or a mobile device.

Digital radiography is especially well suited for imaging the bones and joints of the body because it provides clear, high-resolution images that can be manipulated to show different parts of the anatomy. For example, digital radiography can be used to create 3D images of the bones and joints, which can be helpful for diagnosing problems or planning surgeries.

Orthopedic surgeons often need to see clear, high-resolution images of the bones and joints to diagnose problems and plan surgeries. Digital radiography can provide these images quickly and easily, which is why it is the preferred imaging modality for our orthopedic surgeons.

What are the advantages of digital radiography?

High quality digital x-rays improve diagnosis, clinical decision-making in the office or clinic, preoperative surgical planning, and surgery.

  • Digital x-rays can be enhanced for larger, and clearer high-resolution images that improve accuracy.
  • They reduce the amount of radiation you receive by up to 90% over traditional x-rays because digital x-rays sensors are more sensitive than traditional film, so less radiation is needed to produce an image. This is especially important for children and young adults, who are more sensitive to the effects of radiation.
  • They are faster than traditional x-rays which means you doctor gets the results more quickly than with traditional x-rays.
  • Digital radiography is more environmentally friendly than traditional x-rays. This is because there is no need to develop film or use chemicals to process the images.
